This is a great project to get kids involved in the kitchen! My friend is gluten-free, so we used gluten-free Rice Krispies, but feel free to use regular Rice Krispies, it will work the same. Rice Krispies treats and candy is used to imitate Japanese sushi in this adorable dessert. Substitute or add any of your favorite candy; this recipe is extremely versatile.
My friend, Jennifer, is a Nutrition major like me, and she LOVES to cook. Ten minutes after I met her, she invited me to dinner the following the night.
If you are tight on time, feel free to use pre-made Rice Krispies treats.
Candy Sushi
Ingredients:
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 4 cups miniature marshmallows or 1 package (10 oz) regular marshmallows
- 6 cups Gluten-Free Rice Krispies
- Various candies including Swedish fish, fruit roll-ups, gummy worms, etc.
- Melt butter over low heat in a large saucepan. Add marshmallows and mix until melted. Remove from heat.
- Add Rice Krispies, and stir until well coated.
- Using a buttered spatula or wax paper evenly press mixture into a 9 x 13 inch pan coated with cooking spray or butter. Let cool, then cut into squares.
- Heat butter and marshmallows in a microwave-safe bowl on HIGH for 3 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. Stir until smooth, add Rice Krispies and press mixture into a 9 x 12 inch pan described above. Microwave cooking times may vary.
- This can get messy, so be prepared! Pick up a square of the Rice Krispies treat, and shape into either a thick rectangle (for sashimi) or a thin rectangle (for rolled sushi).
- For rolled sushi, place candy (I used gummy worms) in middle and roll up. Roll a sheet of fruit roll-up around the outside of the sushi. Ta-da! Rolled candy sushi!
- For sashimi, place candy on top of Rice Krispies treat (I used Swedish fish), then put a thin strip of fruit roll-up around the outside to hold the candy in place. Feel free to get creative!
